The Penitent Magdalene is a marble sculpture of Mary Magdalene by Antonio Canova, about 90 cm high, known in two final versions, now in Genoa and St Petersburg. The difficulties in elaborating the theme had led Canova to produce two very different preparatory works.

Just as important, one suspects, is the figure herself, Mary Magdalene mourning the loss of her beloved Jesus. It is a stark and striking image of grief, the painful reality of which in the early 1800’s most households across France were no doubt all too familiar.

The Penitent Magdalene, one of the most celebrated sculptures by Antonio Canova (Possagno 177 - Venice 1822), is the culmination of a long process of invention and study begun in early 1790 and, in the creation stage, lasting from 1794 to the end of 1796.

His sculpture the Penitent Magdalene created in 1794-1796, is one of his greatest religious work. The art is displayed in Museo Agostiniano and it portrays the biblical story of Mary Magdalene in a humility posture that shows her sadness after death of Jesus.
