Anadyr, the administrative center of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, is a port city with a population of about 15 thousand people located in the extreme north-east of Russia in the permafrost zone. Today, a fish processing plant and energy enterprises are operating in the city.

The climate of Anadyr is subarctic, with long, cold winters and mild summers. Anadyr, formerly Novo-Mariinsk, is a city of 15,000 inhabitants, located in the far north-east of Siberia, on the coast of the Anadyr Gulf, belonging to the Bering Sea, at nearly 65 degrees north latitude.

It was founded in 1889 as the easternmost outpost of the Russian Empire. The Camel Hill—the highest point in Anadyr—offers the best view of the city. A 10-metre high Orthodox cross is erected on top of the hill. The Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral proudly rises on the bank of the estuary, on the opposite side of the city.
