Amaurospiza is a genus of seed-eating birds in the cardinal family Cardinalidae that are found in Central and South America. These blue seedeaters are allopatrically distributed and show only small differences in plumage coloration and body measurements.

The blue seedeater (Amaurospiza concolor), or Cabanis's seedeater, is a species of bird in the cardinal family Cardinalidae that is found in southern Mexico and Central America. The Ecuadorian seedeater (Amaurospiza aequatorialis) was formerly considered as a subspecies.

Scarce and very local. A rather plain, easily overlooked, small seed-eating bird. Usually found as singles or pairs in association with seeding bamboo in forested areas, from lowlands to highlands, but mainly in foothills.

The blackish-blue seedeater (Amaurospiza moesta) is a species of bird in the family Cardinalidae, the cardinals or cardinal grosbeaks. It is found in Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. [1]

The genus Amaurospiza, as currently recognized, is comprised of five taxa of blue seedeaters that show minor differences in plumage coloration and body measurements. Recognition of the five taxa as species or subspecies, including the species to which a subspecies belongs, varies among global avian checklists (Table 1).

Amaurospiza is a genus of birds. These 'seedeaters' were formerly associated with the American sparrows and placed in the Emberizidae or (in the Sibley-Ahlquist taxonomy) the Fringillidae. The generic name is derived from the Ancient Greek amauros ('dusky') + spiza ('finch').

Background: Lentino and Restall (2003) discovered a new population of Amaurospiza in northern Venezuela on the Río Caroni, a tributary of the lower Orinoco, Bolívar, that they described as a new species-level taxon, Amaurospiza carrizalensis. It is known from two males and a female, all deposited at Colección Ornitología Phelps in Caracas.
