An altar server is a lay assistant to a member of the clergy during a Christian liturgy. An altar server attends to supporting tasks at the altar such as fetching and carrying, ringing the altar bell, helping bring up the gifts, and bringing up the liturgical books, among other things.

Servers should receive proper formation before they begin to function. The formation should include instruction on the Mass and its parts and their meaning, the various objects used in the liturgy (their names and use), and the various functions of the server during the Mass and other liturgical celebrations.

Altar Servers, vested in a while alb with a cincture and cross, carry the processional cross and candles, hold the Missal for the Priest, prepare the altar, and washes the hands of the Priest. Servers also respond to the prayers and sing the hymns with the rest of the assembly.

ALTAR SERVING AT NOTRE DAME There are 3 Altar Servers assigned to each Saturday evening and Sunday Mass. One person is the Cross Server, and the other two persons are the Candle Servers. Before Mass, Altar Servers will decide themselves who will be re-sponsible for the different roles.
