Alicia is the black mother of Rainbow, Johan and Santamonica Johnson and widow of Paul Johnson. She raised her children in a commune with her husband Paul until it was disbanded by the U.S government.

The show revolves around the wealthy Johnson family as they juggle personal, familial and sociopolitical issues, particularly in trying to reconcile their desire to stay true to their black identities with their choice to live in a wealthy, suburban white neighborhood.

Professor Johnson’s primary scholarly interests are in Bayesian statistics, data science, and statistics education. She is the co-author of the Bayes Rules! book which introduces the power of Bayesian statistics to wider audiences.
