The Série 1500 of the Portuguese Railways were introduced in 1948, [1] making them amongst the first main line diesel locomotives to be used in Europe. These 12 locomotives were built in the United States by ALCO, to the constructor's type RSC-2 specification.

Alco fielded a second A-B-A 4500-hp set of four-axle freight cabs (DL204 & DL205) early in the same year. Dubbed the "Super 1500s" by Alco marketers, the new demonstrators carried road numbers #1500-1501-1502. They donned the colors of Gulf Mobile & Ohio after their tour of a few Eastern U.S. railroads and became GM&O #700-B1-701.

They kept a high profile until recently and were retired from scheduled passenger service on January 1st 2001. Before 1999 they could be found in any service in southern Portugal including Interregionals, Regionals, Suburbanos and freight.
