Akiyoshidai is the largest karst plateau in Japan, spread in the middle and eastern part of Mine City. It was designated as a National Monument (Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park) in 1955 and a special natural monument in 1964. The limestone that makes up the magnificent landscape of Akiyoshidai is about 350 million years ago in the southern sea.

Akiyoshidai Plateau, near the city of Mine in Yamaguchi Prefecture , is unlike anything else you will see in Japan. About 300 million years ago, Akiyoshidai was under the ocean, where a coral reef existed. Over a long period of time, the area was pushed up onto land. Rainwater eroded the land, forming impressive limestone and stalactite formations.

Mine City in Yamaguchi Prefecture is home to Akiyoshidai (秋吉台), the plateau with the highest concentration of karst formations in Japan, and Akiyoshido (秋芳洞, Akiyoshidō), the nation's largest and longest limestone cave. The area which encompasses the plateau and the cave is a designated quasi national park.

Akiyoshidai Kokutei Kōen (秋吉台国定公園) is a Quasi-National Park in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. [3][4] It was founded on 1 November 1955 and has an area of 45.02 km². [5] It includes part of the Akiyoshi plateau (秋吉台, Akiyoshidai), a 130 square kilometre area of karst topography, as well as over 400 limestone caves.

Akiyoshidai International Art Village (AIAV), designed by the architect Arata Isozaki, was founded in 1998 with the aim of providing a platform for artists in residence as well as for a variety of art forms and cultural activities.
