Akashat (Arabic: عكاشات) is a small town in the northwest of the Ar-Rutba District of the Al Anbar province of Iraq, on the road between the towns of Ar-Rutbah and Al-Qa'im. It has a population of around 5,000. It was built as an industrial village in 1985, attached to the local phosphate quarry and administered by the ministry of industry.

Shafaq News / Akashat, or The "mother of phosphate mines" as named locally, is a city located south of Al-Qa'im district far west of Al-Anbar Governorate, close to the Syrian border. The city's name gives the impression that it is one of the richest cities in Iraq as it includes one of the largest phosphate mines in the Middle East.

Located 420 km West of Baghdad on the border with Syria. Mining takes place in two pits. Phosphate rock is crushed and loaded onto rail cars for shipment to the fertilizer plant at Al-Qaim. Akashat is also the main uranium mine of Iraq, associated with the Al-Qaim plant.

The Akashat ambush was a well planned assault against an unarmed Syrian Army convoy defended by Iraqi soldiers that took place on 4 March 2013, as the group was travelling in the province of Anbar, next to the border with Syria. The Islamic State of Iraq claimed responsibility for the ambush on 11 March 2013. [6]

Shafaq News / Beside oil and gas fields, the Akashat town in Rutbah district, al-Anbar governorate, is known to be the home of Iraq's largest phosphate mines before the U.S. invasion in 2003. Prior to the first Gulf War in 1991, Iraq exported phosphates to east and northeast Asia and several European countries.
