2009年2月17日 · If you're doing a full occlusive dressing for a neck wound or possibly an evisceration, you can go right over a couple layers of gauze and just tape it on, because you still have an air-tight seal. The gauze has just been sealed into the dressing. If the size or bulk of the dressing under the seal is an issue, get out the Saran Wrap.

2011年7月1日 · Eh, I would have looked at your funny too....unless it's bigger than a dime or actively bubbling air, you really have no reason to put an occlusive dressing over it. Generally things under the that size (roughly two-thirds the size of the lumen of the trachea) tend to not have sufficient surface area to truly pose a threat.
Would a petrolatum gauze be good for an open chest wound?

Given the shape of the thorax, the uneven shape of many wounds, and hair, blood, and sweat on the skin, it could prove pretty difficult to neatly and securely tape down 3 sides yet leave one side open just enough that air can escape yet close enough to the skin …

2008年3月17日 · As rid said, steer clear of a 4 sided occlusive dressing should you want to let air out. You also can try and align the layers of tissue to allow for the passing of air while the patient cough by plasing your palms of your hand around the wound and moving them around a little.

2015年9月24日 · There really shouldn't be any barriers to having occlusive dressings on a BLS ambulance. They're generally recognized as being a good dressing for open wounds. My state requires a number of occlusive dressings on every licensed BLS ambulance. As for the actual care of open/sucking chest wounds, a dressing with a valve/vent is the way to go.

Penetrating wounds high on the abdomen and on the thorax need to be covered with occlusive dressings just in case they communicate with the pleural space. Any amount of air that makes its way in there adds to the pneumothorax, and increases the possibility of it getting to be a tension pneumo.

2014年9月30日 · If there truly is a coating and lube is an alternative, I was thinking put lube around the inner edge of the adhesive so it remains sticky. So the adhesive part is still porous, but the lube creates the seal before the puncture site, thus providing for an effective occlusive dressing. Totally ball parking this, have not attempted.

If this is a sucking chest wound that has caused a pneumothorax, your occlusive bandage taped down on three sides allows the patient to inhale and draw air in effectively by sealing up the external hole. Excess pressure "should" be what's vented out of the bandage.
