Aida (or Aïda, Italian: [aˈiːda]) is a tragic opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni. Set in the Old Kingdom of Egypt, it was commissioned by Cairo 's Khedivial Opera House and had its première there on 24 December 1871, in a performance conducted by Giovanni Bottesini.

Aida is unusual in Verdi’s output for not being derived from a preexisting play, novel, or epic poem. Instead, its scenario was provided by Auguste Mariette, the French Egyptologist and founder of the Egyptian Museum of Cairo, although its fundamental love-triangle structure is common to many operatic plots.
