Ahupuaʻa (pronounced [əhupuˈwɐʔə]) is a Hawaiian term for a large traditional socioeconomic, geologic, and climatic subdivision of land. [1] . It usually extends from the mountains to the sea and generally includes one or more complete watersheds and marine resources.

Over time, Hawaiians developed a unique land management system. Coinciding with Kirch’s Expansion Period, Māʻilikūkāhi, was said to have established the ahupuaʻa land division in the 1500s. Ahupuaʻa are further divisions of the moku and were used for the purposes of collecting tax tributes to the chief and efficiently managing land use.

What is an ahupua‘a? An ahupuaʻa is a section of land. Our islands are made up of several ahupuaʻa. The borders of each ahupuaʻa usually follow natural boundaries, like mountain ridges or streams. Ahupuaʻa can stretch from the mountain ridges to the coral reef system. Ahupuaʻa vary in size. Some are as small as 100 acres.

The word ahupua‘a is derived from ‘ahu,’ an altar of stones, upon which was placed an image of the head of a pua‘a, or pig that served as boundary markers. However, as you may already have surmised, the ahupua‘a means much more.

Each ahupua‘a was ruled by an ali‘i and included a lowland mala (cultivated area) and upland forested region. The Hawaiians believed that the land, the sea, the clouds and all living things had a certain interconnectedness. This holistic approach can be seen in the ahupua‘a model, a system for sustainability, connection and well-being.
