Ada and John had quite a torrid affair. However, the show mentioned that Ada was unaware that John was actually married and also had a reputation as a casanova.

Jack Brown was murdered by his disgruntled lover Ada Humes. He broke things off with her, and she took revenge. Jack Brown was married to Adela "Adelaide" Mawson-Brown at the time and had two known children (girl & a boy) at the time according to a newspaper article. No record supports the existence of a 2nd child (a son) at this time.
