Abyei is claimed by both countries and has been a source of conflict in the Sudans for over 50 years. Abyei’s rich oil reserves make the region economically desirable to both Sudan and South Sudan.

Geographically, Abyei Area borders Northern Bahr Al Ghazal State to the West, Warrap State to the South, Ruweng Administrative Area to the East and Sudan to the North. Its population is about 400,000 persons.

Abyei is its own Administrative Area claimed by the governments of both South Sudan and Sudan. It borders Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State (Aweil East County) to the south-west, Warrap State (Twic County) to the south, and Unity State (Abiemnhom County) to the south-east.
