Abusua is the name in Akan culture for a group of people that share common maternal ancestry governed by seven major ancient abosom (deities). [1] The Abusua line is considered to be passed through the mother's blood (mogya). There are several Abusua that transcend the different ethnic subgroups outside of the ancient seven.

There are eight clans (extended families) in the Akan community. These are Asona, Agona, Aduana, ɔyoko, Asenee, Biretuo, koɔna and Asakyiri. Each clan is headed by a family head known as abusua pinyin who is both the spiritual and physical representative. Members of the same family are believed to trace their lineage to one ancestor.

Historic Akan societies differed by region but tended to share similar political structures. Members of eight matrilineal clans, or abusua, lived together in villages and cities. Descendants of each abusua did not marry members of their own lineage. Each community formed its own state led by a headman and council of elders.

The term “Abusua Pa” refers to a symbol that represents a happy and united family. In Akan culture, the significance of family is represented by a symbol that depicts four heads: a father, a mother, and two children.

I will talk about the Aduana (Atwea, Abrade, Amoakare ne Ada) Abusua or family. These people are believed to have been led out of the ground by a dog which had fire in his mouth. Hence they are referred to as Ogyaasefuo. This has also become one of the accolades of the Dormaahene who is also from the Aduana family.
