Exactly. I think even fans who aren't NoHotchNoWatch would be upset, and there's a chance killing Hotch off screen for no reason could alienate fans who are still watching the show. I can handle Gideon dying off screen, but Hotch is completely different. Plus, the character is not the actor and vice versa. I think some people are forgetting this.

Later Hotch, standing directly across from Battle who has a hostage, sees JJ clearly.

I think if they were to bring back Hotch, they could make him section chief. Cruz stopped appearing after season 10 and was only mentioned throughout the last few seasons. Maybe Cruz leaves or gets promoted higher up and Hotch comes back and becomes section chief. That way Prentiss can stay unit chief.
