| SES-3 is a communications satellite operated by SES Americom (later SES World Skies. Now, SES). SES-3 was built by Orbital Sciences Corporation (OSC), and is based on the Star-2.4 satellite bus. It is equipped with 24 C-band, and 24 Ku-band transponders, and at launch it had a mass of 3,112 kg (6,861 lb).

AMC-3 (formerly GE-3) is a commercial broadcast communications satellite owned by SES (and formerly GE Americom, then SES Americom, then SES World Skies). Launched on 4 September 1997, from Cape Canaveral, Florida, AMC-3 is a hybrid C-band / Ku-band satellite. It provides coverage to Canada, United States, Mexico, Caribbean.

SES Americom announced in April 2008 the order of a third spacecraft under the multi-satellite contract both companies announced in May 2007. Under this contract, the earlier ordered ground spare became AMC-4R (originally designated AMC-1R), and a new ground spare will be produced for a future use.

It was launched on 15 July 2011 on a Proton-M / Briz-M launch vehicle, alongside the KazSat-2 satellite. It is currently positioned at the 103.0°W orbital location over North America, replacing AMC-1.

SES-3 is a telecommunications satellite principally used to render high power direct-to-home (DTH) and fixed satellite services to Canada, Mexico, the USA and Caribbean regions. The spacecraft was positioned at 103° West longitude and supplanted the existing AMC-1 satellite.
