AC and DC Lionel trains on common tracks with two transformers
It depends on the brand of track and how it is installed/wired. Traditional three rail track has both outside rails electrically connected to each other, so that would subject your DC power supply to a short circuit. Check that first. If the outside rails are not electrically connected to each other, your scheme will be fine. Gargraves and maybe Atlas have all three rails isolated, but it ...
"Universal" AC-DC Power Supply for O-gauge Locomotives and …
Using the LM317T as a preregulator to an eBay DC-DC switcher allows operation at full 22V AC as might be seen if someone bumps the handle on a Z4000. We are talking about a "universal" AC-DC converter rather than one that has the Lionel warning about not operating above 19V AC (or whatever). The LM2596 DC-DC modules can handle 22V AC but the smaller DC-DC …
AC/DC Power reducing “Buck Converter” Installation on model building, to convert wall-mount power pack to AC transformer power. Connect a digital multi-meter to the output end of the “buck” using alligator leads, so you adjust the output and do not send excess voltage to damage the building LEDs. Connect your supply to the AC/DC-IN side

Randy, haven’t you seen the LED lighting products offered by GRJ? He will help you.
Re: AC or DC power for lighting, any difference?
In practical reality there is no difference when you are talking an incandescent bulb, they work equally as well with DC or AC, to get the same amount of light out of the bulb you use the same voltage/power. People have theorized that DC will extend the life of the bulb because A/C is constantly changing its direction and that "wears out" the filament (I suspect some of this went …
AC/DC mixed consists - O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum
2020年1月16日 · I was wondering about the mixing of AC and DC locomotives in a consist. During prolonged slow-speed/high-current operations, and assuming the DC unit(s) are trailing, how does the engineer in the lead AC unit know and respect the traction motor limitations of the DC unit(s) which cannot endure anywhere near what an AC unit can.

AC to DC Conversion Circuit - O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum
I'm not going to try to follow the wiring from a picture, but my wiring diagram will do the task you are talking about. You asked for a wiring diagram, I provided one. One switch selects either AC or DC on the tracks, the other switch swaps the polarity on the rails. I believe that was the object of the exercise, right?

Yes, they all say LM2596. There is also an LM2596T which is more expensive and I'm sure has more functions. You are correct that once I get the regulator set up, it will be a permanent one. I do have a Greenlee multimeter. Thanks
