The 75mm pack howitzer M1 (redesignated the M116 in 1962) was a pack howitzer artillery piece used by the United States. Designed to be moved across difficult terrain, gun and carriage could be broken down into several pieces to be carried by pack animals.

2020年6月7日 · The 75-mm (2.95-in) Pack Howitzer M1A1 on Carriage M8 was one of the Allies’ most successful light weapons of the type. It was a pack howitzer that could be readily adapted for para-dropping, and was used by both British and American airborne units in 1944 and 1945.

The 75mm howitzer played a crucial role in Operation Market Garden providing much needed fire support to Airborne Forces. Production continued until December 1944, although the howitzer remained in use with British Airborne Forces into the 1950s.

During WW2, 75-mm Pack Howitzer M1 artillery pieces were used by both the United States Army as well as the United States Marine Corps; those used by the US Army were typically found in airborne units. Other Allies also received some examples of the 75-mm pack howitzers.

The first variant of the 75mm Pack Howitzer entered service in 1927, but did not fire a shot in anger until the Second World War, where it proved itself to be an effective and reliable weapon. Improvements were made upon the original M1 design throughout the 1930's, culminating in the M8, exclusively modified for the airborne role.
