2016年8月6日 · I have no experience with selectable 4WD, but I've DD'd AWD cars forever, while racing RWD. The primary difference is the monumental difference in traction. Comparing my S4 with ~300HP, which can't keep its wheels spinning in 1st, my 944 with slicks, LSD and 150HP can spin the wheels in 3rd. The second big difference is the rain control.

2022年11月15日 · Whereas awd/4wd with all-seasons are allowed to not chain up most of the time. If you stay on the front range then front wheel drive and good snow rated tires is all that you need. Frankly with my truck I only put it in 4wd to do dumb stuff (like park on the big snow piles after parking lots get plowed). Tires are the number one thing.

I've also heard that 4x4s are typically not changable - while 4WD cars have a clutch between the driveshaft and the front diff, which allows the driver to decide whether they're in a 2WD or a 4WD mood today. All trucks marketed as 4x4 are able to switch between 2x4 (or 4x2) and 4x4. The transfer case allows this.
