
48 Fighter Interceptor Squadron – Eagle Country
The 48th Fighter Interceptor Squadron was stationed at Langley AFB and part of the Air Defence Command. The 48th FIS received the first F-15A/B’s on August 14, 1981 replacing the F-106 Delta Dart. The 48th FIS officially stood up as an F-15 squadron on April 5th 1982.

The 48th FIS flew F-15s from 1982 to 1991, where many of the F-15 were transferred to the Missouri ANG, the Hawaii ANG, and 3 or 4 going to the Boneyard. The squadron is now the 48th Flying Training Squadron flying T-1A Jayhawks out of Columbus AFB Mississippi.

The 48th Flying Training Squadron is part of the 14th Flying Training Wing based at Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi. It operates T-1 Jayhawk aircraft conducting flight training. The squadron is one of the oldest in the Air Force, being formed during World War I as the 48th Aero Squadron on 4 August 1917.

48th FIS / *Korea Osan 1968 48th - F-106 Delta Dart
With growing tensions surrounding the USS Pueblo and EC-121 incidents, the 71st FIS was also deployed to Osan AB in Dec 1968 to assist the 48 FIS. This was all part of an on-going plan to swap F-106 assets as part of a Korean buildup stemming from those incidents.
Serving in Korea - F-106 Delta Dart
The Last F-106 Unit to serve in Korea was the 95th FIS which departed Korea on 1 May 1970. In between these first and last unit deployments also saw the 48th, 71st and 94th FIS's deploy. All the engine shop work for the F-106's deployed to Korea was done at Kadena AB, Okinawa Japan.

Delivered to the USAF in 1978, first assigned to the 49th TFW ('HO'), then the 1st TFW ('FF') before starting to serve this 48th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Langley AFB (VA). It later received the LY tailcode of the 48th FIS. Was moved to the 131st FW ('SL') and ended its career at AMARC with inventory code FH0092 on 12 September 1994.
