4340 VAR AMS 6414 is a low alloy Chromium-Nickel-Molybdenum steel capable of being heat treated to high strength levels. This specification is for a premium aircraft-quality, low-alloy steel in the form of bars, forgings, mechanical tubing,
Atlas 4340 is a nominally 1.8 percent Nickel Chromium Molybdenum low alloy steel of high hardenability, with high strength and toughness in relatively large sections achieved with a "quench-and-temper" heat treatment. A contemporary alternative to 4340 is Atlas 6582 through-hardening steel that has improved through-hardening characteristics and
Heat Treating Common Steels Temperature and Quenching Medium Chart
Heat Treating Steels Temperature and Quenching Medium Table. Notes: (a) Draw at 1,150 °F for tensile strength of 70,000 psi. (b) For spring temper draw at 800–900 °F. Rockwell hardness C-40–45. (c) Bars or forgings may be quenched in water from 1,500–1,600 °F.
LESCALLOY 4340 VAC-ARC steel is a low alloy, nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel capable of being heat treated to high strength levels. The alloy has a good combination of ductility, toughness and strength along with high hardenability.

Straightening: Best done warm 400-800F (205-425C). Hardening: (Atmosphere or Vacuum Furnace). Preheat: 1200-1250 (650-675C), equalize. High Heat: 1475-1500F (800-815C), soak 10 to 30 minutes. For vacuum hardening, use the high side of the high heat range and soak times. Quench: Oil quench to hand warm, 150F (65C). Temper immediately.
