3TGTE with high k’s are known to have a high oil pressure issue in excess of 100psi when revving whilst cold. The cause is a worn oil pressure relief valve bore in the oil pump body. The pressure relief valve basically jams in the closed position. Evidence of this can be seen by a ridge in the valve bore where the piston has dug in.

Developed by Yamaha Motor based on the Toyota 3T power unit, this was Japan’s first turbocharged DOHC engine. It had a displacement of 1,770cc and an in-line 4-cylinder layout with two spark plugs per cylinder. This engine was mounted in the Toyota Celica, Carina and Corona.

3t-gte This was first released in 1982 with a hemi-chambered twin-cam head with twin spark and swirl inlet ports. This engine introduced knock control as well as serious turbocharging through the CT20 Turbo, taken directly from the T Series diesel variants.
