Like holy moly, those 23mm guns just shred planes when you hit them. It's especially strong against divers as they have almost no time to react before they get a stream of light coming towards them, not even the Wirbelwind is as strong (the Wirbelwind is also far less accurate due to the quad cannon design).

The 23mm tail gun on the IL-76 and the Tu-22M is a dual purpose weapon, it acts as both a flare/chaff dispenser as well as a defensive cannon. The idea is that if a fighter fires at the Russian jet with long range radar guided missiles, the bomber can fire chaff from the guns to distract the missiles.
