The Nickel Plate 765 is one of two remaining operating Berkshire steam locomotives. Locomotives of a 2-8-4 wheel arrangement were used mainly for hauling fast, heavy freight trains on large Class I railroads, most notably the Nickel Plate Road and the Chesapeake & Ohio.

There are no surviving L&N 2-8-4 "Berkshire" type locomotives. However, there are two tenders that have survived. They are the tenders from number 1966 now at the Southern Railway Museum in Duluth, GA and the tender from number 1985 at the Kentucky Railway Museum in New Haven, KY.

Only one 2-8-8-8-4 was ever built, a Mallet-type for the Virginian Railway in 1916. [1] Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works, it became the only example of their class XA, so named due to the experimental nature of the locomotive. Like the same railroad's large articulated electrics and the Erie Railroad 2-8-8-8-2s, it was nicknamed "Triplex".
