The Browning automatic rifle (BAR) is a family of American automatic rifles and machine guns used by the United States and numerous other countries during the 20th century.

During WWII, these weapons were manufactured by IBM and the New England Small Arms Corp. This specific BAR is a WWII model manufactured in the later M1918A2 configuration, which allowed the rifle to be fired in at slow rate of fire by rotating the selector lever to "F" for the 350 rounds per minute or moving the lever to the "A" for full automatic.

In 1940 a version that only fired full automatic was adopted. This was designated the M1918A2. Although it only fired full automatic, it had two rates of fire, slow and fast. Ranger units were impressed with the BARs ruggedness and excellent rate of fire. They used the M1918A1 and the M1918A2 during WWII and Korea.
