The earliest part of the Gothic Minster was built between around 1225 and 1255 under the vision and patronage of Archbishop Walter de Gray, who wanted York Minster to be one of the greatest churches in the kingdom.

The Chapter of York (Charity Registration Number 1201499) is the governing body legally responsible for the care, management, administration, and Christian mission, ministry and witness of York Minster on behalf of the Church of England. A non-governing College of Canons assists the Chapter in developing its links with the wider Diocese of York.
