Atropine is a synthetically-derived form of the endogenous alkaloid isolated from the plant Atropa belladonna. Atropine functions as a sympathetic, competitive antagonist of muscarinic cholinergic receptors, thereby abolishing the effects of parasympathetic stimulation.

Atropine, a tropane alkaloid, is an enantiomeric mixture of d-hyoscyamine and l-hyoscyamine [35], with most of its physiological effects due to l-hyoscyamine, the 3(S)-endo isomer of atropine. Its pharmacological effects are due to binding to muscarinic acetylcholine receptors .

Atropine Structure. Atropine is found with hyoscamine in the deadly nightshade plant atropa belladonna. Hyoscyamine is optically active, [a] D-22 o but readily hydrolyses to atropine on hydrolysis in aqueous alcohol. Thus atropine is (±)-hyoscamine [6]. The structure of atropine was investigated by R Willstätter in the late 1890's.
