U.S. Secret Service training utilizes cutting-edge curricula designed to enhance recruits’ existing skills and develop new ones critical to the Agency’s “Zero-Fail Mission”. Special agent trainees train alongside individuals that are equally committed and driven.

The James J. Rowley Training Center [1] (JJRTC, RTC, or Secret Service Training Academy) is the law enforcement training center operated by the United States Secret Service just outside Washington, D.C., in South Laurel, Maryland, [2] near Laurel. It is named after former director James Joseph Rowley.

Classroom study is supplemented by on-the-job training. Officers attend advanced in-service training programs throughout their careers.

New Secret Service agents must complete a mandatory course of training that includes an initial 11 weeks at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia, followed an additional 17 weeks of specialized training at the James J. Rowley Training Center in Washington D.C., the Secret Service’s training center.

The core curriculum is augmented with skills training in firearms, control tactics, physical training, water safety, and advanced emergency medicine. Peripheral classes introduce the students to a variety of administrative programs operating within the Secret Service. The SATC is 100 instructional days and consists of 769 hours of instruction.

Most 1811 agencies (i.e. Secret Service, ATF, DSS, HSI, OIG) are located at Glynco, Georgia and involve the completion of the initial 3 month Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) and a respective agency follow-on academy (usually an additional 3 months).
