Russell had his first race (Talladega GP) in 1986, between 1987 and 1988 he raced mainly AMA Supersport events (being named Rookie of the year in 1988), he won the AMA 750 Supersport championship in 1990 and finished 2nd overall in the Supersport 600's riding Kawasakis after moving from Suzuki.
