Museum collections contain human remains in diverse forms, including entire preserved bodies, discrete parts of the anatomy, and even art and artifacts created out of human body parts.

One of the most important prerequisites for the use of human bodies in educational settings is the appropriate preservation of the cadaver. Preservation is considered appropriate when the cadaver is kept safe from harm, destruction or decomposition. This is achieved by treating the cadaver with special chemicals, i.e. embalming.

Plastination is a technique or process used in anatomy to preserve bodies or body parts, first developed by Gunther von Hagens in 1977. [1] . The water and fat are replaced by certain plastics, yielding specimens that can be touched, do not smell or decay, and even retain most properties of the original sample. [2]

From the seventeenth century onwards, specimens were preserved in fluids, an art which would make the Amsterdam anatomist Frederik Ruysch (1638-1731) world-famous. Initially, alcohol (about 60%) was used as the preserving liquid, but at the end of the nineteenth century formalin was used as well.

Human remains preserve a clear record of past life to later generations. These remains, even if dated hundreds or thousands of years ago, maintain their human dignity and force the community to reflect on the ethical issues related to their analysis, curation and display.

Currently underutilized sources of human skeletal material from preserved tissue offer a solution. Earliest preservation and skeletonization techniques followed guidelines that were very different from the present. The anatomy collection consists over 1,000 specimens preserved to demonstrate human anatomy. The specimens consist of preserved prosections (e.g. cadaveric parts dissected to demonstrate certain anatomic structures), articulated and disarticulated bones, and resin casts demonstrating the vascular, respiratory, urinary and biliary systems.
