Kore (Greek: κόρη "maiden"; plural korai) is the modern term [1] given to a type of free-standing ancient Greek sculpture of the Archaic period depicting female figures, always of a young age. Kouroi are the youthful male equivalent of kore statues.

The Korai of the Acropolis of Athens are a group of female statues (Korai), discovered in the Perserschutt of the Acropolis of Athens in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, all of the same typology and clear votive function.

A kore (pl. korai) is a standing Archaic stone statue (typically in marble or limestone) of a draped, unmarried female figure. Usually these statues were life-size. With the development of the korai, Greek sculpture started to become more “monumental” (Whitley 198).

Most were found in 1882 east of the Parthenon, while part of her gluteus was discovered in 1939 at the north slope of the Acropolis. The statue's base was located in two pieces in 1882 northeast of the Parthenon.

The Kore was discovered in January of 1886 in the so-called "Korai Pit", northwest of the Erechtheion. She was reassembled from 15 fragments and restored. She is one of the largest Korai of the Acropolis, carved in two separate marble pieces which were joined together.
