Born in Wichita, Kansas but raised in Massillon, Ohio, George Whitfield Jr. graduated from Youngstown State where he played under Jim Tressel. Whitfield spent his early career as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa. Prior to joining the Hawkeyes, he had a brief stint as a quarterback in the Arena Football League.
