If you want heavy armor and shield, you will have to multiclass, the typical choices being a dip into either Fighter (which has to be your first level, but also gives you the Defense Fighting Style) or Clerics of certain domains. Natural armor is applicable only when not wearing normal armor. It really works kind of like Unarmored Defense. See DMG page 276: "If your monster wears manufactured armor, its Armor Class is based on the type of armor worn (see the Player's Handbook for armor types). If the monster carries a shield, apply the shield bonus to its AC as normal.

That is correct, Basic D&D starts off at 9 and AD&D starts off at 10. But the differences are slight. For example no armor is 9 in BD&D and 10 in AD&D, leather is 7 in BD&D vs 8 in AD&D, but chain is 5 in both, and plate is 3 in both.
