Tanzania is an important country for the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture. It is the headquarters for IITA operations in the Eastern Africa region, working in six countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, South- Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda).

IITA’s main priority is securing a stable and food secure future for sub-Saharan Africa. To do this we focus on key research themes that look at staple food crops, including banana and plantain, cassava, cowpea, maize, soybean, and yam.

IITA has developed human capacity through sponsoring MSc and PhD researchers in Rwanda in partnership with Inter/national universities and trained over 400 partners’ staff. As a result, IITA alumni are now key decision makers in the government or public system, which facilitates scaling of research concepts products and outcomes.

Dr Ehui particularly highlighted CGIAR’s collaboration through IITA, the Excellence in Agronomy Initiative, and Germany’s BMZ and GIZ on a new initiative for soil health and fertilizer improvement, which positions IITA at the forefront of Africa’s agricultural transformation agenda.

IITA also rented office space in a building in the city center that served as an administrative base. Relocating to northern Mozambique was a strategic move by IITA to cover all the major agricultural zones of the country and for operational efficiency.
