2014年10月30日 · If the context is obviously far removed from anything clinical, such as "Dr. xyz has written a book on archaeology of early Los Angeles", then it's obviously the PhD sense. If it's a clinical setting, including emergencies and simply asking for health advice, basically when someone's health is at stake, then it's obviously the MD sense.

Longtime industry PhD scientist here - I don't see Dr. in LinkedIn much, but often see [name], PhD. My profile just has my name (no titles) but in the education section it shows PhD. PhDs rarely get addressed by "Dr" (except when being introduced to give a talk at a conference, for example). Industry is usually first name basis for everyone.

It would be a crime to practice medicine w/o a license which requires an MD, DO, DC, DDS, etc., and it would probably be fraud to represent yourself has having a PhD for a position that required it. But just going around calling yourself Dr. Big Shot is not a crime here as far as I know.
