USS Newport News (CA–148) was the third and last ship of the Des Moines -class of heavy cruisers in the United States Navy. She was the first fully air-conditioned surface ship and the last active all-gun heavy cruiser in the United States Navy. [1]

The USS Newport News (CA-148) was the only one of the three Des Moines Class Heavy Cruisers to see combat: 3 tours to the gun-line in Vietnam 1967 thru 1972. Decommissioned on June 27, 1975, the NEWPORT NEWS spent the following years laid up at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Philadelphia, Penn.
