
Brechin Cathedral - Wikipedia
Brechin Cathedral dates from the 13th century. As a congregation of the Church of Scotland, which is Presbyterian, the church is not technically a cathedral, in spite of its name. It is in the Pointed style, but suffered maltreatment in 1806 at the hands of restorers, whose work was subsequently removed during the restoration completed in 1902.

At over 800 years old, the Cathedral is a beautiful and historic building of great significance, a landmark at the heart of the city. In 2021 it was closed for worship by the Church of Scotland. We are a group who aspire to take on the management of the Cathedral and Hall for the benefit of the whole community.

Brechin Round Tower, 25m tall and nearly 5m wide, is one of only two Irish-style round towers still standing in Scotland. A striking decoration around the first-floor doorway indicates Brechin Round Tower was built about AD 1100, but a date a century or so earlier cannot be ruled out.

Brechin Cathedral stands on ground that rises above the north bank of Skinner's Burn, a tributary of the River South Esk, in the heart of the extremely attractive town of Brechin in Angus. There is free parking nearby and the usual approach is by walking down the gentle hill of Church Lane from Church Street.

The cathedral was originally dedicated to the Holy Trinity and this is commemorated in the Coat of Arms of the town which has a gold shield with three red rays converging at a point near the base. The Round Tower is one of only two of a kind in Scotland, dating from AD 1100.

The doorway is six feet off the ground, providing security for the people or valuables within, the top of the tower is 86 feet high. The original cruciform cathedral dedicated to the Holy Trinity appears to have remained intact until 1806 when major structural alterations were carried out.

Perhaps most intriguing is the rare, 11th century conical tower. The cathedral Is open daily From 9.30am to 5pm (Summer) and 4pm (Winter). It reaches 86ft (28m) and is said to echo aspects of early Irish Celtic design. The tower is 15ft (5m) in diameter and tapers towards the top, yet the interior measures a fairly constant 8ft (2.6m).

Brechin cathedral is a fabulous gothic building with an unusual 86 feet high round tower (one of only two in Scotland) and a vast array of modern stained glass windows (see website www.brechincathedral.org/content/sub_page.php?page_id=33&sub_id=51 for some examples).
