They tend to be pale in appearance when young, but mature to have a brightly purple-blue (some yellow) colored bell.

Cyanea lamarckii is a pelagic species. Umbrella or saucer shaped. Uniformly fairly thick jelly, that thins suddenly at the bell margin. Clusters of stinging cells (nematocysts) are prominent on the upper surface of the bell. The margin of the bell has eight groups of 40-60 tentacles. Cyanea lamarckii is similar to Cyanea capillata.
