General Description.—Shadscale is a compact spinescent shrub that is typically 15 to 120 cm tall and 30 to 170 cm wide. Branches are scruffy when young but become rigid, brittle, and spiny with age. Leaves are nearly circular to elliptic, oval, or oblong, 9 to 25 mm long and 4 to 20 mm wide (Blauer and others 1976). Flowers are imperfect.
