Southern Russia or the South of Russia (Russian: Юг России, IPA: [juk rɐˈsʲiɪ]) is a colloquial term for the southernmost geographic portion of European Russia. The term is generally used to refer to the region of Russia's Southern Federal District and North Caucasian Federal District. [1]

South Russia was established on 8 January 1919 by the White movement after reorganization of their armed forces in the Southern Front, consisting of territory under their control in Ukraine, Crimea, Kuban, the North Caucasus, Black Earth region, Lower Volga, and the Don region.

Villages of South Russia A village as referred to by GRHS represents a settlement founded by our GR ancestors in rural areas of present day Ukraine. Generally, the original villages were populated by small numbers of German immigrants in response to the invitation by Catherine the Great of Russia.

GRHC staff and volunteers created two maps designed for easy identification of mother and daughter villages of South Russia and to show their approximate geographic locations. Accompanied with the maps is a special supplement: "Mother Colonies Reference List for Map One and Map Two."

Schönfeld Mennonite Settlement was located in the district of Alexandrovsk, province of Ekaterinoslav (now Zaporizhia Oblast), Russia. The nucleus of the settlement was the estate consisting of 14,000 acres which was purchased from D. N. Brazol, 20 July 1868.
