In the 21st century, the Lumber River is a highly prized recreation corridor in North Carolina. Active outdoor recreation and festivals are among the most popular activities, including canoeing, boating, fishing, hunting, picnicking, camping, nature study, swimming, biking, jogging, crafts, and fossil and artifact hunting.

Possibilities for paddling on this 115-mile river are extraordinary. An abundance of wildlife and plant life, including the belted kingfisher and the rare Carolina bogmint, helped Lumber River earn federal designation as a National Wild and Scenic River, the only blackwater river in the state to have that honor.

The Lumber River is located in south-central North Carolina in the flat Coastal Plain. The river's headwaters are known as Drowning Creek; the waterway known as the Lumber River extends from the Scotland County-Hoke County border 115 miles downstream to the North Carolina-South Carolina border.

The Lumber River is the only blackwater river in North Carolina to be designated as a National Wild and Scenic River by the United States (US) Department of the Interior. The river is 115 miles (185 km) long from its headwaters at the confluence of Drowning Creek and Buffalo Creek near Wagram in Scotland County. [ 3 ]

Black & Decker employees race their homemade paddle-wheeler on the Lumber River. Riverside trees provide perches for more species than birds and squirrels. They also shelter wildlife and shade fishermen who seek to hook a bass or a bream. Summer's heat is tempered by a dip in cool river waters. Kids out on a limb!

Early habitation of the Lumber River basin by indigenous people is confirmed by artifacts found throughout Southeastern N.C. In 1984, a yellow pine dugout canoe measuring over 16 feet in length was found by diver Paul Valenti in the river beneath the former McNeill steel bridge on the west side of Lumberton.

One of North Carolina’s oldest land trusts, the Lumber River Conservancy, along with it’s with community partners, works to preserve the beauty and biodiversity of the Lumber River and its watershed. We are an all-volunteer group made up of men and women from all walks of life.
