Copenhagen’s main street, Strøget, was entirely pedestrianized in 1962, providing increased financial revenue for businesses. Overall, Copenhagen saw a 600 percent increase in pedestrian space from 1962 to 2005.

Water, light, green spaces and innovative thinking are key elements in Copenhagen’s architectural development and some of the ingredients that combine sustainable actions with a high quality of life.

In Copenhagen, we have addressed our challenges with both adaptation and mitigation initiatives, in recognition of the added benefits such as less air pollution, better health and optimised recycling on the way to our vision: A zero waste city. Reducing carbon emissions is just a small part of being a sustainable city.
