The name, originally associated with a spouting sea monster, has today become the scientific name of the sperm whale or cachalot (Physeter macrocephalus). Pliny states that the largest animals in the Indian Sea are the Pristis (shark) and the Balaena (whale).

Physeter has an enormous head, equalling 35% of the length of the body, with a greatly-developed facial depression that contains the spermaceti organ. This structure is derived from the melon of other odontocetes, and like the melon, may serve as a sort of acoustic lens.

The name Physeter is a Greek word meaning “blower,” and refers to the whale’s behavior of making a vapor spout when it exhales air from its lungs at the surface.
