2024年6月18日 · Ellen Ochoa, STS-56 mission specialist, takes a brief time out from a busy day in space to play a 15-minute set of flute music on the space shuttle Discovery’s aft flight deck. Ochoa, who has played the flute for years, performed the Marine Corps Hymn, Navy Hymn and God Save the Queen for fellow crew members as well as some Vivaldi for herself.

Ellen Ochoa (born May 10, 1958) is an American engineer, former astronaut and former director of the Johnson Space Center. [1] In 1993, Ochoa became the first Latina woman to go to space when she served on a nine-day mission aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. [2]

On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride was the first American woman to go into space. To see another woman achieve this accomplishment was an inspiration for Ellen. Along with some of her classmates, she applied to the NASA Astronaut Training Program in 1985, the same year she received her doctoral degree.

2017年3月3日 · Following STS-96, Ellen served as CapCom (capsule communicator) in NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston, communicating with astronauts who were working in space. In 2002, she made her fourth mission to space on STS-110, again on Atlantis. By that time, the space station had grown and crews had lived on board for a couple of years.

As director, Ellen oversaw the initial development of the Orion spacecraft which is being designed to take a human crew beyond low Earth orbit. Period: 2018 to 2024 LATE CAREER
