An American commercial company became the first to stick a perfect moon landing early Sunday when Firefly Aerospace sent its Blue Ghost lander down to the surface.

The Houston-based company is poised to land its Athena spacecraft on the moon at 12:30 p.m. ET. The landing site closer to the lunar south pole than any human or vehicle has traveled before.

Moon landings were once exclusive to government agencies, but Firefly Aerospace is now the second company to do it.

Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost lunar lander successfully made a soft touchdown near an ancient volcanic feature on the moon’s near side early Sunday morning.

"One of these days, we're going to get there in terms of the commercial aspects of the moon," Kim said. "There's going to be a lot of business plans that are going to be self-sustaining and growing.
