Perhaps inspired by New York City, Wilmington residents helped change a street to an avenue
In fact, Fifth Avenue was called Fifth Street until January 1915. The Wilmington News-Dispatch reported on Dec. 9, 1914, that "51 citizens" had petitioned city council to adopt the Fifth Avenue name.
