The puffin tour of Machias Seal Island was the hands-down highlight of our trip to Maine. We were able to dock on the island and spend time in the puffin blind. So many birds and this is definitely… Al B的完整评论

We went to Maine specifically for this trip after being told about it from a photographer friend. The weather was iffy and we were afraid the Puffin Tour would be cancelled or that we wouldn't get to… Jean A的完整评论
How difficult is it to physically transfer from the larger boat to the small one and then to get from that on to the island itself?

The boat crew will assist you on and off the boats. From large boat to small, you may sit and swerve your body onto the next boat. If you listen to the captain's instructions, you will be fine, he has done this procedure many times for many years. After arriving on the island, the seaweed is growing on the place you will disembark the boat and it is slippery. You will disembark the boat in a certain order so the boat will not become unbalanced, and wearing proper shoes for walking would be best. If you're in reasonably good health, you should be okay. Once on the island, the terns may dive bomb you to protect their nesting sights. The crew will advise you on how to get past the terns, using a "tern stick" which you hold higher than your head.
From what I understand the tour allows you to be quite close to the birds -- but I'm still unsure of exactly how close, ie, which lens I should bring if I go next summer. To get a profile of a puffin, would I need something beyond 250mm, or are you really that close? Thanks!

I took my 100-400mm lens and I was glad I did. I got some really great shots of the birds in the water and on the rocks as we approached and left the island. We had perfect weather and the captain was able to get the boat close to the other island for some great shots of the seals. My 100-400mm lens felt like a small kit lens compared to the 600mm and 800mm lenses other people took with them. Once you are in the blind I think the bigger lenses might actually be too much.
