You do need to know how to swim. I am not a great swimmer, but if you can swim and float, you can do this. Bear in mind, you will not be able to stand in the water because you have the fin on and because it will be too deep. The instructor is a certified lifeguard and has the patience of a saint. She can work with pretty much any swim skill level. She will also have a raft and a floatation device with her for you to use.
